Vet jobs on your terms: self-employed home visits

Last updated

If you are looking for a vet job with flexible hours, home visits let you work as a self-employed veterinary surgeon on your own schedule. On Pet Care at Door you set your own fees and hours, keep 100% of what you charge, and pay nothing until your first 5 completed bookings, then a flat £49.90 a month. It is self-employed work, not a salaried post.

What the work is

You see pet owners' animals at home, as a self-employed veterinary surgeon. Owners find you by postcode and book a fixed 30-minute visit in the slots you open. You examine, advise, vaccinate and prescribe, and refer to a clinic when something needs surgery, imaging or hospital care.

This is not a salaried post or a locum shift. There is no employer setting your rota: you choose when you are available, how far you travel and what you charge.

Who it suits

  • vets who want part-time or flexible work around a salaried role, family or study
  • locums who want income on days between shifts (see locum vet work vs home visits)
  • vets returning to practice who want a lighter, self-paced caseload
  • vets who enjoy unhurried consultations and continuity with the same clients

How pay works

  • You set your own consultation fee, and a travel fee for addresses outside the radius you choose.
  • You keep 100% of your fees. Pet Care at Door takes no commission.
  • No subscription until your first 5 completed bookings. After that it is a flat £49.90 a month, and you can cancel at any time.
  • Owners see your full price for their address before they book, so there are no awkward conversations about money at the door.

For context, UK home visit practices publish routine home consultation prices of roughly £80 to £225, according to our home vet visit cost guide. We do not publish earnings estimates, because what you earn depends on the fee you set and how many visits you take.

What you need

  • current RCVS registration as a veterinary surgeon; we check it, and your ID, before you can take bookings
  • professional indemnity that covers self-employed home visits (see our indemnity guide)
  • registered premises only if you store or supply medicines (see do you need registered premises)
  • if you carry controlled drugs, the vehicle storage and register rules in our controlled drugs guide

How to start

  • Create your profile and add your RCVS details.
  • Set your fee, service radius and the days and times you are available.
  • We verify your registration and ID. Once approved, owners in your area can book you.

Full details of the platform are on the join page. Practices with several vets can use the practice plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a salaried vet job?

No. It is self-employed work. You set your own fees and hours and are paid by the pet owners you see. There is no salary and no rota.

Can I do this part time or alongside another vet job?

Yes. You choose which days and times you open for bookings, so many vets fit home visits around a salaried role, locum shifts or family commitments.

How much does it cost to join?

Nothing until your first 5 completed bookings. After that the subscription is a flat £49.90 a month, with no commission on your fees, and you can cancel at any time.

Do I need my own practice premises?

Only if you store or supply medicines. A vet who consults and writes prescriptions without supplying medicines does not need registered premises. Our premises guide quotes the RCVS rules.

Can registered veterinary nurses join?

Yes, but under RCVS rules a registered veterinary nurse cannot work independently of a vet, so the care a nurse can offer on their own is limited. Our indemnity guide and vet nurse guide explain what applies.
